CHR Secures 3 Prestigious Federal Grants to Meet the Needs of Children, Families and Adults in the A

Community Health Resources (CHR), the state’s most comprehensive nonprofit behavioral healthcare agency, was recently awarded three prestigious federal grants to meet the needs of children, families and adults in the aftermath of the pandemic. CHR competed nationally for all three grants, each of which is administered by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

“This vital funding will sustain recovery-focused programs in the northcentral part of the state, launch new services for people of all ages in northeastern Connecticut, and bring trauma-focused care to youth in more than half of the state,” said Heather Gates, President and CEO of CHR. “We are very proud to be offering these important services, especially now.”

Two CCBHC Awards

CHR is the only agency in CT to receive two Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) grants in the recent round of SAMHSA funding. CCBHC funding is designed to support comprehensive agencies like CHR that offer a wide range of mental health and substance use services for people of all ages. The CCBHC grants are highly competitive and each total $4 million over four years.

In light of alarming rates of trauma among children and teens in northcentral Connecticut, predating the start of the pandemic and intensifying in recent months, CHR’s third SAMHSA grant will help to implement a thoughtful plan to expand access to personalized, evidence-based trauma treatments for at-risk youth.

The grant is named HEAL, standing for Hope through Expanded Access to Local Trauma Treatment. It will provide screenings and treatments in CHR’s five outpatient clinics; more than 40 school-based clinics; and pediatric practices where CHR clinicians see clients. In addition, care coordination will be provided directly in each family’s home. Every child or teen will be matched with one of five treatment options, based on their unique needs.

“We created the framework for HEAL in late 2019. Needless the say, the demand for trauma-focused care is even more essential today,” Gates added. “HEAL builds upon CHR’s strengths as a provider of trauma treatments and expands the range of care in all outpatient and school-based settings.”

About CHR: CHR is Connecticut’s most comprehensive, nonprofit behavioral healthcare agency and provides a wide range of services for children, families and adults whose lives have been touched by mental illness, addiction, trauma, homelessness and more. CHR was the first nonprofit in CT to meet all of the rigorous federal criteria as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic and has repeatedly been named among the Top Workplaces in the state.
