Theoretically, the dishwasher should be cleaning itself. Unfortunately, that’s simply not the case. As time goes by, bits of food, grease, and undissolved detergent build-up on the dishwasher’s filter and interior walls. In other words, if you don’t clean the dishwasher properly, your appliance won’t be able to do its job.

Today we’ll be covering the best ways to keep your dishwasher clean and odour-free. If the odour is your biggest problem, run the Rinse Only cycle and leave the door opened slightly to circulate airflow. To prevent any unwanted smells, wipe excess food before loading plates, silverware, bowls, and any other items into your dishwasher. If you’re loading any new items into the appliance, be sure to remove any paper labels or tags, too.

Remove and Rinse the Filter
If the filter isn’t clean, nothing else will be. To eliminate stains on future loads, unlock and remove the filter found below the bottom spray arm and rinse it under hot water. Take a toothbrush and scrub the mesh screen and plastic frame to get rid of any grease or particles stuck in the crevices. When you’re done, lock it back into place. This process should be done weekly.

Give it a Deep Clean
When cleaning the dishwasher, your main concerns should be removing any trapped particles, mineral buildup, and detergent residue. Place a glass measuring cup filled with two cups of distilled white vinegar on the top rack and run the cycle normally without any dishes or detergent. If you want to be more thorough, use cleaning tablets from either Affresh or Cascade because they contain surfactants that dissolve food bits and greasy residue.

Polish Stainless Steel
Fingerprints can make any surface look dull and grimy, especially on stainless steel appliances. Use a stainless steel cleaner like GH Seal Weiman and Affresh to aid a nice shine to your dishwasher door. These products also contain ingredients to help repel future dirt and smudges.
