Dishwashers are meant to make life easier and more convenient for homeowners but can be a pain when your appliance stop working properly. Are you having issues with your dishwasher? Has your dishwasher stopped draining properly and water is beginning to pool at the bottom? It may be time to unclog your dishwasher pump.

Unclogging your Pump

In the best-case scenario, if you see standing water pooling up at the bottom of your dishwasher, it just needs to be unclogged. Luckily, there is a simple cleaning solution you can create using household products for minor clogs.

The ingredients include a mixture of baking soda and vinegar poured into the dishwasher’s baskets, and ran for 15 minutes. Follow this up with a hot water rinse, which will help loosen up the clog.

Cleaning your Pump

If unclogging your pump does not work, it may be time to clean the pump itself to get things working again. Follow the below steps:

  1. Remove and Clean Your Filter: Start by removing your filter with soapy water. Use a soft brush to remove any remaining debris.
  2. Take Off the Pump Cover: To access the pump, you’ll have to remove the pump cover which is located right under the filter.
  3. Clean Your Pump: Wash the pump with water and a clean sponge. Make sure to remove any large pieces of food.

Other Potential Culprits

If the above tips do not work for you, it may not be the dishwasher pump that is causing the issue. Other potential culprits are a dirty dishwasher, a clogged drain hose, and a broken drain valve. Make sure to contact your local dishwasher repairman to take a look if none of the above tips work.
