Medicare is a federally backed health insurance program for those 65 and older, younger persons with disabilities, and patients with kidney failure. Medicare can help cover some of the costs of medical expenses.

Two parts make up Medicare, Part A, and Part B. If you need additional coverage, you can apply for Medicare Supplement Insurance from an insurance company.

Medicare Part A: This section of Medicare covers patient care in a hospital, hospice, nursing homes, and home health care. It is often known as hospital insurance.

Medicare Part B: Also known as medical insurance, part B covers doctor’s visits, outpatient care, home health care, medical equipment, and some preventative assistance.

Additional coverage from insurance companies includes prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing. This coverage is known as Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you are over 65 and have worked and paid Medicare taxes, you may be eligible for hospital insurance at no extra cost. All you’ll have to do is pay a monthly premium for medical insurance.

The enrollment period for Medicare begins three months before you turn 65 and three months after your birthday. It’s essential to enroll before the period ends as delays could result in higher premiums. However, if you or your spouse are still employed during this time and have coverage at work, you could qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

The Special Enrollment Period gives you an additional eight months after employment insurance ends to avoid higher premiums when applying for Medicare.

You can apply for Medicare online using the application form.

Once you have applied for Medicare and have qualified, you will receive a Medicare card containing your Medicare number and a package with all of your information.

Medicare can also be paired with Medicaid if you qualify. Medicaid is different from Medicare as it’s only available to low-income families.

The monthly cost of Medicare will depend on how much you make during the year. For example, an individual that made less than $88,000 will pay $148.50 a month. According to Medicare, anything above $111,000 will pay $297.00 a month.
