Medical insurance isn’t the only essential coverage for individuals or families. Dental is just as important as you can save yourself hefty dental expenses.

Dental insurance may be available through your employer, or you can purchase it independently. As part of your medical benefits, buying it through your employer may be the cheaper option.

Many medical and dental plans provided by employers may expire once the individual has retired. If that’s the case, you will need to purchase insurance through an insurance provider.

So, what does dental insurance cover?

Dental insurance covers cleanings, fillings, crowns, and preventative care. Some insurance plans may cover a portion of orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics costs.

Dental insurance does not cover teeth whitenings or other cosmetic procedures.

Deductibles for dental insurance can range, with some plans as low as $50, and the coverage amount can vary from $1,000 to $1,500 a year.

Some insurance companies may also provide the following:

One hundred percent for cleanings, exams, and fluoride treatments. Eighty percent for fillings, tooth extractions, root canals, and emergency x-rays. And fifty percent for bridges, crowns, and implants.

Insurance companies may also cover dentures, dental restoration repairs, wisdom tooth removals, and anesthesia.

When it comes to dental insurance, you may come across the following terms.

Copayment: This is the amount that the patient pays for treatment.

Dual coverage: Like medical insurance, two separate dental plans may cover the cost of treatment.

Treatment limitations:  Some insurance plans may only cover treatments a certain amount of times per year. For example, some insurance plans may only cover cleanings twice a year.

Deductibles: These are the costs you pay before receiving treatment. Your insurance provider will then pay for any fees after the treatment.

At Lara’s Insurance, we can help you find an insurance provider that offers both medical and dental insurance for you and your family. We are also here to assist you with your insurance questions, such as providing additional answers for the above terminology.
