Real talk: Did your 5-year-old just tease you about having too many open tabs?

No one ever wanted to say “tech-savvy toddler” but here we are. It’s not like you just walked into the kitchen one morning and your kid was sucking on a binky and editing Wikipedia, right? Wait, really? It was pretty close to that? Well, for years there’s been an ongoing conversation on internet usage in families’ lives, and in 2020, the pandemic made us come face-to-face with that elephant in the room, the internet. There was no way around it. We went online for everything from virtual classrooms ...[

About one-third of Firefox users have installed an add-on before whether it’s an extension to add powerful and customizable features or a visual theme to personalize the web browsing experience. But if you’re unfamiliar, add-ons are sort of like apps for your browser. They can add all kinds of features to Firefox to make browsing faster, safer or just more fun.
The past year introduced some exciting new changes to the extensions world. The majority of these changes are foundational and take place in the deepl...[

Mozilla to Explore Healthy Social Media Alternative
Posted On: December 20, 2022
In early 2023, Mozilla will stand up and test a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. We’re eager to join the community in growing, experimenting, and learning how we can together solve the technical, experience, and trustworthiness challenges inherent in hyper-scale social systems. Our intention is to contribute to the healthy and sustainable growth of a federated social space that doesn’t just operate but thrives on its own terms, independent of profit- and control-motivated tech firms. An open, decentralize...[

A state-by-state look at the long-reads that captivated Pocket users in 2022
Posted On: December 15, 2022
Every year, the top stories that were saved and read by Pocket’s more than 10 million users clue us in to the prevailing mood of the time. In 2020, readers looked for answers in The Atlantic’s exploration of how the pandemic might end. In 2021, The New York Times’ piece on “languishing” captured what we collectively felt when it didn’t.
This year, the stories people Pocketed are more varied: Many readers saved a guide to improving our lives in small ways, which checks out with the theme of renewal that we saw in overall saves i...[

Our Year in Review: How Firefox works for you
Posted On: December 13, 2022
Before we close the year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect and look back on what we accomplished in 2022. This year continued to be a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, and we know how important it is to have something in life you can rely on. So, here at Firefox, we continued to focus on the features that mattered the most and meet you where you are at. If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that Firefox will always deliver the best web experience wherever you are.

Over a decade of anti-tracking work at Mozilla
Posted On: December 8, 2022
I joined the Firefox privacy and security team in 2016. For years, the privacy engineers here at Mozilla have known that online trackers use every identifier they can get to track and re-identify people all over the internet. Over the last six years, I’ve been able to contribute to Private Browsing, Tracking Protection, Containers, Monitor, Relay and other privacy features and products. In all that time, in the back of my mind, I always felt like we weren’t protecting all the major identifiers… yet. In October, we launched Firefox Relay p...[

How we’re making Firefox accessible and delightful for everyone
Posted On: December 2, 2022
I joined Mozilla in 2017 as an accessibility engineer and soon became the tech lead for accessibility. But for years prior, I was already deeply involved with the company. I co-created NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) in 2006, a screen reader for blind and vision impaired people like me. We wanted to make Firefox and NVDA work as well as they could together to provide everyone the best possible access to the web.
With NVDA, I helped change the world for a lot of people through a free and open-source screen reader. Now at Mozilla, I get to d...[

I’m proud to announce that we have acquired Pulse, an incredible team that has developed some truly novel machine learning approaches to help streamline the digital workplace. The products that Raj, Jag, Rolf, and team have built are a great demonstration of their creativity and skill, and we’re incredibly excited to bring their expertise into our organization. They will spearhead our efforts in applied ethical machine learning, as we invest to make Mozilla products more personal, starting with Pocket.

Celebrating Pocket’s Best of 2022
Posted On: November 30, 2022
The run-up to December is always my favorite time of year at Pocket. It’s when we sift through our data (always anonymous and aggregated—we’re part of Mozilla, after all ), to see which must-read profiles, thought-provoking essays, and illuminating explainers Pocket readers loved best over the past 12 months.
Today, we’re delighted to bring you Pocket’s Best of 2022. This year’s honor roll is our biggest ever: a whopping 20 lists celebrating the year’s top articles across culture, technology, science, business, and more. All ...[

3 ways to use Mozilla Hubs, a VR platform that’s accessible and private by design
Posted On: November 29, 2022

When NASA’s Webb Space Telescope team and artist Ashley Zelinskie wanted to bring space exploration to everyone, they chose Mozilla Hubs, our open source platform for creating 3D virtual spaces right from your browser.
Ashley told us that they “didn’t want to cut people out that didn’t have fancy VR headsets or little experience in VR. … If we were going to invite the world to experience the Webb Telescope we wanted everyone to be able to attend.”
That’s exactly why Mozilla has been investi...[
