advice on emergency heat
Question from user Supdog69 at hvacadvice at reddit.com.
Answer:
I need advice on Emergency Heat. I'm in the process of getting my heat pump replaced. Had a leak in my condenser and my HVAC guy says he could fix it, but it would only be a bandaid, would cost a good amount and might not fix the problem for long. My current system is 16 years old and I've decided to replace it, but they can't put my new system in for a week. Here's my problem. It's below freezing outside (29° currently) and my heat pump is really struggling to keep up. I have my thermostat set to 68 and it's currently showing “Heat†though it's bounced back and forth between heat and aux heat and still not keeping up. It's currently 67 in my house and the air handler and heat pump have been running for hours straight and probably will all night. Would it be more economical to run my Emergency Heat where it will at least get up to temp and shut off or just let my heat pump run all night and never get to temperature? Thanks for any input.
