Microwave ovens are an easy-to-use kitchen appliance that makes heating up food quick and convenient for homeowners. But, how do microwave ovens cook food?

Well, inside the microwave box, you can find a microwave generator called the magnetron. The magnetron uses electricity from your power outlet and converts this energy into high-powered radio waves. We call these radio waves: microwaves.

The microwaves are blasted into the food compartment through a channel called the wave guide.

The food sitting on the turntable inside will spin slowly so that the food will cook evenly.

The microwaves begin to bounce back and forth within the reflective metal walls of the food compartment. The microwaves penetrate the food itself, similarly to how radio waves can pass through walls. As the microwaves travel through the food, the molecules inside being to vibrate more quickly.

The faster these molecules vibrate, the hotter the food becomes, which is why your food heats up when you use a microwave.
