Here is a simplified version of how your furnace works.


The most common type of furnace is gas and turns on when it receives a signal from the thermostat. The thermostat sends a signal to the unit when the temperature in the home drops below the set temperature.


Once the signal has been received, the gas valve turns on and will ignite the burner, which will heat an exchanger, then the heat will circulate in the exchanger, turning into the air. Air will then be forced through the system by a blower and move throughout the house via the ducting system.


When your home reaches the set temperature, the furnace will shut off until the temperature drops again, and the process starts all over again.


Furnaces also work with filters that help pull away hair and other debris away from the air in your home. It's recommended that you change these filters often. The smaller the filter, the more often you need to change it.


Other types of furnaces include electric, oil, modulating, and heat pump. However, a heat pump is not considered a traditional furnace, but it can be combined with a furnace to improve heating efficiency.
