Need Advice - maggots got into fridge
Posted On: August 3, 2023

I searched on reddit/google already and found some old posts but nothing recent enough where I can ask clarifying questions.

I will spare you most of the gory details, but the long story short is that we went on a very long vacation and came back to a fridge/freezer full of maggots.

The breaker that controls the fridge had gotten flipped off while we were gone.

We had some construction work at the house and I suspect that someone cut the electric and forgot to turn it back on but I can't really prove it.

Well this was obviously all a big surprise.

We had thrown out most of the food from the fridge portion before we left, but honestly didn't really think we needed to get rid of what was in the freezer.

The freezer was way worse than the top part as that's where our little friends really had the party going.

The fridge is a GE Cafe Series, stainless steel French door style with bottom freezer.

There's an ice maker in the bottom freezer and an internal water dispenser inside the fridge.

It's only 2 years old.

What we've done so far:.

The worst of it has been taken care of (btw: my husband definitely deserves husband of the year for taking on the hardest parts).

At this point we've taken out anything that we could (drawers, shelves, etc.) and run through the dishwasher twice or soaked in the tub (for the bigger parts).

I've also cleaned the interior with vinegar/water AND a bleach solution.

We have pulled the fridge itself out of it's nook so we could clean underneath.

There are still some nooks and crannies to work on but.

the worst is over.

We called an exterminator and the guy basically said he couldn't help us because the fridge is used for food and that we'd be better off getting a new fridge.

What to do next?:

I'm on the fence about whether we should just cut our losses at this point or if we can get it the rest of the way there.

I'm a bit worried about the water lines coming into the fridge or anything else I can't really see like the fan, compressor, etc.

Or I can throw $3500 at it and sleep better at night.

Question from user musichen at Appliances at reddit.

Buy a new fridge.
