For whatever reason my 1 year old furnace just started acting up. The other night I noticed the house was cold and the furnace was pushing out room temperature/somewhat colder air. The control board had blinking lights indicating an error – the error is open limit switch fault. I reset the switch by pushing it in and hearing it click. Shortly later the limit switch tripped again. A hvac guy ran testing using various instruments and basically told me my home has old ductwork with hard 90° angles which reduces airflow and also the old ductwork isn't necessarily up to par with a new furnace. Basically the furnace is trying to push more hot air than the ductwork can disperse and the only permanent fix is adding additional ductwork to my house- this would allow the furnace to move the hot air better instead of being “choked” on the current ductwork and overheating. Do I have any other options besides them installing additional ducts? I'm worried about the cost since I just had a child and I'm already buried in hospital bills. I am quite certain this will cost several thousand dollars. He did try to slightly raise some plate that sits above the flames since I think this is the piece that is overheating and causing the trip. He also slightly lowered the gas pressure to the furnace and that worked for 1.5 days then it tripped again.

Answer:

The high temperature limit switch is normally auto-resetting.

It could be the rollout switch which is a different problem – and you should not keep on resetting it.

Can you post a picture of the switch you reset as well as the full model number of the furnace?
