I never installed batteries into our hardwired VIVE thermostat and it's been working fine but today it shut off. I checked the breakers and nothing was tripped. I have a Bosch ISD 2.0 BOVA-36HDN1-M20G with a BVA-24WN1-M20. 24kBTU, Air Handler Unit 2.0 unit. It was installed in my attic (no basement) and the problem is the sound. what is this weird filter at the back of my furnace air return

Does anyone know what this filter is supposed to do in my air return? It is old and has shiny fiberglass looking fibers and based on how old the furnace was when we replaced it, I'd guess it was from the 90s. It's nasty and probably not doing much but not sure what the purpose is. Is it safe to remove? The first photo is where it is located and has a blue circle to show where it is and the red line shows how the filter is located within that duct. The two other photos just show what it looks like.
