help with ac wiring
Posted On: July 2, 2023
Quick synopsis: I just purchased a house built in the 1830's it's been through several owners and just before we bought it had A/C added but not a new thermostat wired in.
The old thermostat had no cooling option, I'm having an issue wiring the new thermostat.
There are three wires, a red wire I have going to “R” a white wire going to “W” and a Blue wire going to “Y.
The fuse in the air handler(?) is not blown and power is turned on at the inside breaker, outside breaker and switch on the side of the furnace.

hvac issue technician has been here 35 hours and still doesn’t know what the issue is
Posted On: June 30, 2023
Hi all, found a technician with good reviews but said he's been on biz for 2 years.
Live in new build, 18 months old and ac on main floor isn't blowing cold air anymore.
HVAC guy is still here after almost 4hrs and doesn't seem to know what the issue is yet.
Has found some other issues like intake vent is burnt out and permanently closed, too much low voltage going to hvac panel outlet.
Should it take this long? He's charging by the hour and has been on the phone for half of it w a friend in the biz trying to trouble shoot.
Ac on top floor whic...[

hopefully capacitor advice

Ok so it's been a HOT Sunday in my household.
We realized as I left to run errands that it was 5° warmer than it should have been.
By the time I got home to check it out, it reached 83° inside.
Went through basic troubleshooting and easily found a power line issue… turned out the 60A breaker on the main feed for outside had a bad leg.
Went and tracked down a replacement and success! We now have 240v at the outside unit! .
After a little while, it hit 85° and I realized it's still not right.
Nothing is making any strange noises, and everyth...[

what could cause 1 yr old hvac to create smoke smell
Posted On: June 25, 2023
The unit still actively and quickly cools the house, but it was burning something causing Carbon monoxide and nauseousness.
This was confirmed by the emergency utility technician that came out to rule out a gas leak and help identify the problem.
Could opening more registers or removing the register filters help solve this issue? The builders used the floor registers as a trash can for sweeping away debris, so I had put filters to try to keep the air cleaner for my family.
We also closed some registers (as directed on the main unit's instructio...[

hvac maintenance what do you do
Posted On: June 24, 2023
What do HVAC techs actually do when they perform annual maintenance in AC/furnace? My house is 3 years old.
Do I need to have HVAC serviced? I don't currently have any issues.
I have a very tight budget right now, so I want to know how much I can expect to spend and why.
Question from user OppositeArt8562 at hvacadvice at reddit.
Answer:
Well if you're broke don't worry about it.
Maintenance whether it's AC or furnace is to just get out there, test components, clean stuff up that sort of thing.
The biggest thing it to try to find issues so they...[

why is my pool heater steaming?
Posted On: June 24, 2023
If you notice your pool heater steaming, it could indicate a potential issue that needs attention. While we can provide some general information, it’s important to note that specific troubleshooting and repairs should be carried out by a professional pool heater technician.
Yes, it can be normal to see some steam coming from your pool heater, particularly when the weather is colder. When cold pool water enters the heater and comes into contact with the hot heating elements, it can create steam or vapor that rises from the unit. This is typica...[

having to switch breaker to get unit to start up
Posted On: June 23, 2023
I noticed my outside unit wasn't running, i left it completely off for 30 minutes and tried again, still nothing.
Then I reset the breaker and turned it back on at the thermostat again, instantly working and turned back on and it's currently cooling.
So the AC unit is only working after the breaker inside my house is reset.
Sorry if this is confusing, I have very minimal knowledge on this and I'm a little flustered.
Question from user shearlock-combs at hvacadvice at reddit.
Answer:
If the unit keeps doing that.
It would be good to check for an...[

why is my pool heater leaking?

Why do pool heaters leak? Why are my pool heater lines leaking? Why does my gas pool heater keep leaking water onto the ground? There are many reasons why your pool heater might be leaking. Pool heaters can leak for many reasons including rust, faulty seals at joints in pipes, and metal fatigue. These can cause leaks in any size or type of gas or electric pool heater.
Typically rust chips returned from thousands of gallons of heated saltwater return to their point of origin: The bottom where there’s a good chance that they’ll fall right int...[
