what do you think of this pricing

Company called me to do a service call for regular maintenance on a system less than 1 year old. First service call was around $400 which was steep but I noticed they charged like $130 to change the air filter. Ok, I will tell them not to do that next time.
When they called to do the service call I pointed out that there was a zoned tstat that was not functioning properly and neded to be changed. This is what they charged me:.
$180 to change the t-stat that was still under warranty. Had it not been under warranty the tstat with install would ha...[

why would both my furnace and my tankless hot water heater be exhausting gas
Posted On: January 30, 2023
After waiting longer than I ought to have after noticing sometimes a gas smell outside of my condo I called the gas company to inspect.
They went to read the exhaust from the furnace (outside) then came in to turn off the gas to the furnace after that reading.
Then the guy had the thought because he had noticed a pattern with high efficiency appliances to check my hot water heater exhaust (exhausts into a completely separate area) and it was also reading gas in the exhaust (again outside, no readings inside thank goodness.).

bosch ids 20 heat pump install how hacky is this really
Posted On: January 30, 2023
I had a family acquaintance that works for a HVAC company by day and does stuff on the side set this up. It's a brand new Bosch IDS 2.0 4 ton whole home heat pump with matching air handler.
I don't feel like it's been performing very well at all when the temp gets anywhere below 35 or so.
Thermostat is set to 67, air coming out of the vents seems to be around 88-90.
Paid an actual HVAC company to come out and look at the setup as a second opinion. They quoted me over 5k to basically reconfigure the air handler. They said the handler should be u...[

replacing 30yo 25 ton gas hvac
Posted On: January 29, 2023
I was quoted $8,100 to replace our HVAC unit. It kicks on and the fan blows, but there's no heat. it's about 30 yo so I expected to replace it when I bought this place, but I mostly want to know if this price, with installation, seems accurate, and whether repairs were even worth considering.
The quote is in comments.
Question from user mojovi88 at hvacadvice at reddit.com.
Answer:
This doesn’t look unreasonable compared to the market I’m in but the only way to get an accurate answer to your question is to get more quotes and compare. This ...[

float safety switch install cost
Posted On: January 29, 2023
HVAC company is quoting me $307 for the parts and installation of a float safety switch for my furnace.that seemed pretty high but wanted to check if this is way out of the price range? Thanks!.
Question from user dashsmurf at hvacadvice at reddit.com.
Answer:
Call around and get more quotes, but in the long run it may be cheaper spending a little bit extra on the job the first time. Also, how much is your free time worth? If you spend an hour collecting quotes to save $50, is your free time with $50 an hour?

blowing cold air when heat pump enters defrost mode
Posted On: January 29, 2023
I have a standalone (non-dual fuel) electric Heat Pump/AC. I tend to notice the issue of cold air blasting about every hour/when condenser enters defrost mode more when it is below freezing. I have the lockout set to 17 degrees. This has been happening since the new system was installed about a year ago and 3 techs can't figure it out. One thread I saw said you need to let the thermostat know that it is OK to run AUX the same time as the heat pump but I can't figure out how to do that.
My setup:.

is this mini split too damaged to use do i have and alternatives other than buying a new one
Posted On: January 29, 2023
Question from user sweettaterpie65 at hvacadvice at reddit.com.
Answer:
For more context I purchased this new, and it was damaged in transit. Unfortunately, the merchant won’t take it back. My options are, I have someone install as is or I pay ~$1200-1300 out of pocket for a new one. I want to know the risk of installing it as is (assuming it works).

refrigerant stops at 5lbs
Posted On: January 29, 2023
I went to recharge an empty system after vaccuum. Condenser kicked on blower and O.D. fan running. All is kosher except i cant get any more refrigerant than 5 lbs of r-410A.
I read online that after it is turned on creates head pressure. Is this what is happening? I tried babying it into the vapor side, but then THE WEIGHT WENT UP ON THE BOTTLE! I guess moving the refriegerant into the bottle.
Manufacturer calls for 11 lbs.
No faults on defrost board for any switches.
expansion valve is stuck?
Liquid line clogged?
Does running it while rechar...[
