I'm in the middle of enclosing our basement. We've got a two story, plus basement, home in the mountains of North Carolina. We're at a pretty high altitude, and summers peak in the low 70⁰s. We're extremely comfortable in every season, except for the winter. We're relying on baseboard heaters, which do okay, but, are insanely expensive to run. I've got the ceiling (of the basement) open, and am considering HVAC options, and seem to think that a simple electric furnace is the way to go. I should be able to easily run ductwork to heat the ba...[More]

Newhomeowner here so still figuring things out but currently our thermostat is set at 68. The past couple days we have noticed it won't reach 68 but stays around 64/65 degrees. I even noticed tonight it's literally blowing cold air out at 65 degrees. We have recently replaced the air filter so I know it's not that. I'm not sure what it could be and curious if anyone on hear experienced something similar or could point us in the right direction. Question from user Secret-Helicopter-88 at hvacadvice at reddit.com. Answer: We had a similar problem...[More]

Question from user Supdog69 at hvacadvice at reddit.com. Answer: I need advice on Emergency Heat. I'm in the process of getting my heat pump replaced. Had a leak in my condenser and my HVAC guy says he could fix it, but it would only be a bandaid, would cost a good amount and might not fix the problem for long. My current system is 16 years old and I've decided to replace it, but they can't put my new system in for a week. Here's my problem. It's below freezing outside (29° currently) and my heat pump is really struggling to keep up. I have ...[More]

i need help with troubleshooting my air condition cooling unit

Hey guys I’m hoping maybe someone may know how to diagnose my Air Condition Cooling unit issue. Got a couple of technicians that came out and they only trying to sell me a whole new system.and we trying to save money since we are running low because we just bought the place. The gas furnace works now after clearing clog gas line. Air Condition cooling unit condenser still not kicking in and the fan motor doesn’t spin (the fan motor should work since I got a reading of 40 ohms + 48 ohms = 88 ohms). I replaced the disconnect box with a non-fu...[More]

Why Does My Furnace Sound Like Running Water?

Why Does My Furnace Sound Like Running Water?

Posted On: March 11, 2023
Lots of heating systems can produce annoying noises, like gurgling or knocking sounds coming from a boiler or radiator. Old furnaces rarely made running water or gurgling noises because there was no condensation or liquid involved. Today, newer and high-efficiency furnaces do produce condensation. This means that under certain circumstances, your furnace will sound like there’s running water somewhere. This might not be too big a deal, but if you don’t get it checked out by a heating technician as soon as possible, you could risk extensive ...[More]

For whatever reason my 1 year old furnace just started acting up. The other night I noticed the house was cold and the furnace was pushing out room temperature/somewhat colder air. The control board had blinking lights indicating an error the error is open limit switch fault. I reset the switch by pushing it in and hearing it click. Shortly later the limit switch tripped again. A hvac guy ran testing using various instruments and basically told me my home has old ductwork with hard 90° angles which reduces airflow and also the old ductwo...[More]
